Goldsmiths

Goldsmiths, University of London

All members of academic staff are research active and all were considered in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise. There is a varied research community in the Design Department. The ethos that drives this research is to integrate scholarship with practice. A number of staff are designers and artists actively engaged in their own practices - a good number running their own consultancies/studios - with work regularly exhibited in the UK and beyond and with a considerable number of designs in production. Some of their research has generated intellectual property leading to UK design registration and international patents. Others are publishing regularly through conference proceedings, in journal articles and books. Not surprisingly, individuals and groups in the Department are called on regularly to examine and advise in other academic institutions and also advise other commercial and political bodies on both educational and design matters. With a world-class reputation for creativity and innovation and a commitment to encouraging inter-disciplinary collaboration, Goldsmiths provides researchers with a unique intellectual environment in which to pursue their studies. Whilst benefiting from the wide-ranging resources of the University of London, Goldsmiths also offers all the advantages of a small, campus-based College. The College belongs to the prestigious 1994 Group of Research Universities and our consistently excellent performance is reflected in our RAE Rating.

RCA

Royal College of Art

The College’s principal research aim is to develop its contribution to scholarship and applied research in art and design and to act as a catalyst to encourage and stimulate industry at national and international level. The RCA is unusual both in its particular juxtaposition of art in a design environment and design in an art environment, and in its advancement of knowledge in the principles, of art and design in their specific relation to industrial and commercial processes. The belief that knowledge can be generated, and questions answered, through analytic scholarship, experimentation and innovative examples of artefacts and designs, underpins our developing research projects and disciplines. Collaborative research is wide-ranging and takes many forms. The RCA has extensive relationships with other world-class institutions including Imperial College London, the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Science Museum.
